Figures in the Neptune pool on the grounds the of the "Hearst Castle" The Hearst castle has become a well visited tourist attraction. It's worth a stop but I found it oddly disappointing. Not because it's cheesy or second rate. Everything at the castle is first class: the best that money could buy at the time. What I found disappointing was how alien all this European material was to early 20th century California. Hearst obviously had little or no interest in domestic art and architecture; the entire castle is imported. To use a modern analogy it's like the California style suburbs being built in Chinese cities today. Obsession with things foreign is a sign of cultural insecurity and looks silly in a few years. Be authentic people!
