I have attempted to restore this snapshot of me walking by the stone walls of Cusco a number of times. It’s one of my better been there done that snapshots. The original print is damaged, has blown highlights, and is printed on patterned paper. Patterned paper is a pain for restorers. It’s now less of a pain with Affinity Photo and the Fourier Transform filter. The FFT filter is capable of removing regular patterns without excessively blurring or damaging the underlying image. I applied the filter and then median blurred away the crap in the sky which I then layer painted back to recover the rest of the image. I finished things off with a usual round of spotting followed by adding noise and false color. I’m still not entirely thrilled but given the poor shape of the original, it’s tolerable.
