This weekend we drove over to Richland Washington to tour the Hanford LIGO gravitational wave observatory. LIGO is easily the coolest thing within a thousand kilometers of Boise. I was surprised to learn that LIGO conducts public tours on the second Saturday of each month. Even better, the tours are conducted by staff members. I decided a visit was mandatory so we drove the 500 km from Boise to attend the February 10th tour. The three staff members present were as excited as their visitors. They clearly love their work and know they are doing something very special. I’ve toured many observatories around the world but LIGO’s show and tell is the best I’ve ever attended: the magic sauce is meeting with staff. For some strange reason, LIGO is only rated the 14th best thing to see in the Tri-Cities area. What’s wrong with you people?
