The Big Hole Battlefield National Monument. This small monument preserves the site of the largest battle in the 1877 Nez Perce war. The Nez Perce under Chief Joseph made a desperate bid to flee their reservation for Canada. On the way, they were ambushed by the US Calvary at Big Hole. The battle did not go well for the Calvary. The Nez Perce fought a successful retreat and flee operation. Not long after the Battle of Big Hole, they were captured in northern Montana about 60 kilometers from the Canadian border.
