Idaho Instants
Read MoreHallowed eclipsing ground. This is where we saw our second total solar eclipse of the Sun. It’s a rest stop in Mackay Idaho that had been converted to a makeshift viewing area. The grassy areas to the east and south were filled with serious photographers and serious amateur astronomers with serious gear. They needed grass to cut down on dust and keep the untutored mobs away from their delicate instruments. The center area, a gravel parking lot, was cordoned off with pink plastic ribbon. Mackay officials must have been expecting a much bigger crowd. A few hundred showed up but there was plenty of room in the eclipsing zone. A few old security guys in red shirts, (a Star Trek reference), were cruising around on 4x4s, like the green cat shown here, making sure we were eclipsing right.
